The Puzzle: Plant ten trees in five rows with four trees in each row. (Your math teacher might only know one answer to this puzzle) There are SIX different answers to this puzzle. Each answer is topologically different from the others.
The Strategy:
  • Draw five lines (every line may go to the edges of your paper)
  • Each new line must intersect all prior lines (but not at any prior intersection)
  • Plant trees at the ten intersections
  • Erase the unneeded excess lines
Click here and I will draw my first line for my first solution. I will take you step-by-step through finding the five harder to find solutions. These are the five solutions that many math teachers don't know about. I will leave the simple solution (the one most math teachers know) for you to find on your own.
