How do you measure exactly six quarts
when all you have are 4 qt and 8 qt cylinders?

You can do this with two pourings from your water supply, and two pourings from one cylinder to the other.

With one pouring from your water faucet into one cylinder, and one pouring from one cylinder to the other, you can end up with four quarts of water in your eight quart cylinder. I bet you can figure it out, but the answer is at the very bottom of this page if you need it.

Now that you have four quarts of water in your eight quart cylinder, we need to figure out a way of measuring two quarts of water using only the four quart cylinder. The key to this solution is using a cylinder that is a perfect cylinder.

How to measure two quarts of water with a four quart cylinder
  • Fill your four quart cylinder with water from your water faucet.
  • Carefully tilt the cylinder until the water level exactly touches both the rim of the cylinder and the opposite "corner", like in this picture.
  • You now have exactly two quarts of water in your four quart cylinder.
  • If you want to, you can try this at home with an empty tin can. Most tin cans are perfect cylinders.

Now, you can finish the job.
