You have nine coins, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and J.

One of them is fake, heavier than the other eight. Use a balance scale twice to find the counterfeit.

• What we did:
  • We divided the 9 coins into 3 groups of three
  • We put the first group on the scale's left side
  • We put the second group on the right side
  • The scale balanced
    
• What does this mean?
  • The first two groups weigh the same
  • Obviously, the fake isn't on the scale
  • The counterfeit must be in the third group
