The Puzzle:

You have nine coins, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and J. Eight are genuine. One is fake. The fake coin is heavier than the other eight. Use a balance scale two times and figure out which coin is fake.

Hints: Please reread Scale Puzzles 101 for help developing your strategy. The nine-coin strategy is similar to the three-coin method in SP101. but you will use the strategy twice, once on triple groups, the second time on single coins.

The Strategy:
  • Divide your coins into 3 groups of three
  • Put A, B and C on the scale's left pan
  • Put D, E and F on the scale's right pan

Three outcomes are possible:
(For each possible outcome, figure out which triple includes the fake, then figure out how to determine which, of that three, is the fake)
